HOW TO GET AN IN SPORTS REPORTING

Yes, we agree that help is needed for the struggling Islanders.  Last nights Blue Jackets game even proved that further.  I would agree with most of these trade offerings minus one.  Unless you are trying to get on the bad side of the folks here at CHT.com you don't mention Theo's name in a trade to our team.  I don't care how good of a player he is, I don't want this cancer on our team.  Sometimes, I wonder, from a hockey standpoint, if Alan is really in tune with his readers.  There are things I agree with, wholeheartedly, but other things that come out of Melville, I just got to shake my head and say, "He's gotta be doing it on purpose."

Milbury Could Be Dealing to Wake Up Isles

Alan Hahn

March 8, 2002

As the Islanders continue to stumble, bumble and fumble away precious points in the standings - with last night's embarrassing 5-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at Nassau Coliseum being the latest in an alarming stretch - the call for a shakeup grows louder and louder. With the trade deadline looming 11 days from today, general manager Mike Milbury might be more inclined to make a move than he was before the Olympic break.

There are some options, though it is less likely the Islanders will be involved in a deal that includes a headliner such as Bill Guerin or Teemu Selanne, no matter how much either would help this team.

Instead, the Islanders have been focusing on defensemen such as Edmonton's Tom Poti and Tampa Bay's Pavel Kubina to bolster their overworked defense corps. Pittsburgh's Darius Kasparaitis appears to be a longshot because the Penguins are still within reach of a playoff berth and there has been some recent reports of a technicality in his contract that would affect his free-agent status this summer.

Up front, where the Islanders need to find help for center Alexei Yashin, the one name that continues to surface is Blue Jackets left wing Geoff Sanderson, whom the Islanders will see front and center tonight in Columbus. Sanderson, 30, who has posted two 40-goal and three 30-goal seasons in his career, has struggled with injuries this season and last month returned after undergoing hernia surgery in December. He makes $2.1 million this season and is a restricted free agent this summer.

In Edmonton, Oilers GM Kevin Lowe is quietly admitting a need to trade the highly skilled Poti; fans there are down on him for his soft play. Lowe also told confidants that he would consider moving struggling winger Anson Carter for the right deal. Lowe loves Brad Isbister, who is an Alberta native. Other potentially available players include Washington's Chris Simon, Buffalo's Chris Gratton and, seriously, Theo Fleury of the Rangers.

Of course, the only thing that seems certain at this point is that the Islanders are in need of a boost and that the acquisition of talent often injects life into a team. Milbury has not been making deals this season in an effort to allow the Islanders to develop. But after last night's performance, with a playoff berth far from being locked up, it appears a change would do them good.

March 9, 2002-"Osgood Owes 'Em One"

Owes us 1???  How about the 4 he gave up the night before?  I want that one back also.  Why are you pussyfooting around?  Take off your kid gloves and slam them.  They need to be accountable for the piss poor showing the last two nights, heck, since the Olympics.  Alan, if you let them know that the fans are angry and embarrassed AND their home town newspaper's beat reporter is also livid, perhaps they will wake up.  Quit your coddling.  I am not happy with this article, where by you have scolded fans in the past, yet you let Ozzy off the hook quite easily.  Oleg back in the game? AND NO COMMENT.  Lindgren scratched for a second game?  AND NO COMMENT.

March 3, 2002-"Robinson Checks Ego at Door"

This article has nothing to do with the Islanders.  So that why the low ranking.

February 26, 2002-"Islanders Control Own Destiny as Season Resumes"

A powerful article, as the first article, printed coming back after the break.  I especially like this quote, "A .500 record in their final 25 games would not only be good enough to earn a playoff spot, it would produce the best point total (92) for an Islanders team since the 1983-84 season."  I hope every Islander reads this article, for me, it send goose bumps up and down my spine.

March 2, 2002-"Smith Helps DiPietro Cope With Trade Rumor"

I can't stand all these trade rumors myself.  I personally feel that this kid ain't going anywhere.  I believe that Snow would be traded before DiPietro.  The problem that most folks fail to take into consideration is the Mike Milbury Love Affair Quotient or MMLAQ.  MM has an affinity towards this guy and we know what that means.  For further explanation, see Oleg Kvasha.

March 1, 2002-"Late Addition Miller Continues to Impress

I love these articles focusing on players.  I think we need more of them.  In fact here is an idea, Alan: Have one day a week where you focus on one Islanders staffer.  Let's say its Monday.  I know every Monday 5 pages from the back page of Newsday, there will be a biography on one of the Islanders- players, coaches, staff- Hell, I want to hear about Chere O'Neill and her role with the Isles. Lastly, Jiri Slegr, what do you know Alan? Quit stalling...Spill the beans!!!

               February 27, 2002-"Touch Still Golden"

Was this not an exciting game to watch?  Peca has single handedly delivered 3 points over the last 2 NHL games.  His leadership is at an all time high right now.  I believe today's article really captures that feel.  If they would have pulled out a victory you would have gotten the "A".  I love the quotes Alan gets from the players.

Peca raises his hands in joy after a goal which tied the game.

February 24, 2002-"Best Money Can Buy Will Battle for Gold"

Some interesting tidbits iun the OVERTIME section- Leetch asking for Chelios? That means Theo's on his way out?  It fits right in to the Rangers game plan by signing yet an over-40 player. ARE WE ON THE SAME WAVE LENGTH, ALAN? Why didn't Herb Brooks speak up?

February 17, 2002-"Olympics' Toll On Credibility A Steep Price

Nothing exciting.  What I believe to be pitter-patter Olympic material, waiting for the big 'STUFF' to happen.  I can't give every article high grades.  How will I differentiate when the US takes Gold and the Isles make the playoffs?

            February 13, 2002-"Isles' Short-Range Goal

A decent article on a decent game. Not too much controversy in the article or in the game for that matter.  It was exciting though knowing that Peca scored SH in OT and the article, IMHO, captured that.  Favorite quote given by Snow, jokingly, "I knew we weren't going to score four on four, so I thought we could score three on four."

February 13, 2002-"Osgood Considers American Citizenship

An "A" for the choice of content.  The part of Ozzie and getting his citizenship is a great story.  Don't want to hear that we would lose Kelly Miller, to coach Michigan State next year, since he is doing so well here.  Hey people in charge at Newsday's Sports desk-  These are the things we want to hear about.  Let Alan write these little blurbs when there are no other Islander's stories available.  You would set a precedence of having Isles related material in the paper everyday.  I would buy the paper everyday if I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, there would be an Isles article printed, well during hockey season anyway.  You know what really chaps my butt?  Is that the Post doesn't even have the decency to write their own story on a New York team but uses a wire report.  See what I am talking about?

February 12, 2002- "Time to Get Tough? Cummins could get his chance vs. Flyers

A great article.  Alan is mentioning some of the players and their contributions.  Webby and his being a presence on the team that is sorely missed.  And Cummins, who has had a HUGE impact on this team, especially with his face.  But the best statement of this article is the last line...  "Although he is far more skilled and offensively gifted, Kvasha's apathetic tendencies drive his teammates and the coaching staff crazy."  Perhaps, someone else, specifically Oleg, will take notice that every one sees his mock participation on the ice.  Ever hear of the KvashaKam?  What a huge game for our boys tonight.....

February 11, 2002- "Another One Gets Away

The grade isn't so much for Alan's article as it is for the content the Islanders gave him to work with yesterday.  A "B" grade will be par-for-the-course.

February 10, 2002- "Isles Pushing for Points

February 10, 2002-"No Red Line, Wider Surface Worth Seeing

February 3, 2002- "Something Must Be Done About Fleury

Alan redeems himself and gets top honors by being the first NY area reporter, that I know of, to say those words we long to hear, "SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THEO!!!"

January 27, 2002- " 'D' Man the Islanders Need and Want Now

... A message to Theo Fleury regarding his "up yours" salute to fans at Nassau Coliseum: Get a grip. A message to those fans at the Coliseum who chant "Crackhead Theo" at a recovering substance abuser: Get a life.

This is a direct quote from this article.  "GET A LIFE!!!" It really seemed as if Alan was trying to alienate his readers, who were already aggravated by the "gesture" given by Theo.  I understand you are a reporter and its against your "hypocratic oath" to take sides.  BUT, this is NY sports, THIS IS LONG ISLAND SPORTS Alan, not CNN International.  You are the voice of the common folk of the Island.  TSK, TSK, Alan!!!  You should do better by us, especially since you are a Long Island boy yourself.

BREAKAWAYS

February 17, 2002  Quick notes from around the league.  No mention of any Islanders.

February 9, 2002  Notable quote:  Colin Campbell, NHL Czar of Discipline -- His reply to a complaining Theo Fleury was priceless and pointed: "Well, is it proper to flap your arms like a chicken at other players? Is it appropriate to make obscene gestures to the fans? I think common sense has to kick in someplace here.”

February 3, 2002  Alexei Yashin, Islanders: A hat trick in the first period against the Rangers and a fight in the second period. Gordie Howe couldn't be prouder.

NYRS.Com Note:  Yashin gave Kolechuk (sp) a broken nose
